Urban News & Views

Charlotte is participating in the national resurgence of urban centers. One important component of revitalizing center cities is special events that bring people together to have fun, rediscover unique uptown spaces and, often, raise funds and awareness to benefit others.

MECA Properties supports this philosophy of urban renaissance. Working in collaboration with Camden Square Associates, MECA has created a collection of distinctive event spaces.

Locations for special events include:

  • The Courtyard at 101 W. Worthington Ave.
  • The Atrium at 127 W. Worthington Ave.
  • The Plaza at 1930 Camden Rd.
  • Nebel and Tompkins alleys, which run between these buildings.

Best Impressions Caterers is the exclusive, onsite caterer for the DCC. In addition to catering events in the DCC's distinctive event spaces, Best Impressions Caterers operates Byron's South End in The Courtyard building, a 5,000-sq.-ft. banquet facility accommodating up to 400 people. Its proximity to the other DCC spaces creates unique indoor/outdoor options for events.

A variety of receptions, meetings, fundraisers, corporate outings, festivals, trade shows, seminars and social gatherings are scheduled in these spaces throughout the year. To schedule your memorable event in any of the DCC's unique spaces, including Byron's South End, call (704) 333-9744. For more information, visit Best Impressions Caterers.

Showcase Events

In addition to the variety of trade shows, receptions and other events that have been presented in the Design Center of the Carolinas since it opened in 1998, several major events have been held to support selected arts organizations. Here's an overview of a couple of these events:

Community School of the Arts Children's Arts Festival

The Community School of the Arts (CSA) enjoyed a great response to its Children's Arts Festival when it was held in Camden Square Village. Thousands of budding artists and their families participated in free, hands-on activities offered throughout the Design Center of the Carolinas' Tompkins and Nebel Alleys. In addition, a variety of dance and musical performances were presented during this event.

For information about the Children's Arts Festival, call the CSA, 704-377-4187.

Camden Square Village Artist Market

The Camden Square Village Artist Market attracted thousands of people to the DCC during the summer months in 2000, 2001 and 2002. Original work by area visual artists was displayed in the Nebel and Tompkins alleys at the DCC. Approximately 30 artists would show and sell a diverse assortment of work during this free monthly event, including oil paintings, watercolors, pastels, pottery, woodworking, glass, jewelry and photography. The Camden Square Village Artist Market was sponsored by CharlotteArtists.com, Camden Square Associates and MECA Properties.
